Impossible corners – wall art that reshapes reality 🧠✨
YOU WON'T BELIEVE YOUR EYES!
Because they don't just see the world – they build it.
Impossible Corners are illusion-based wall installations that make the room behave... strangely. When you move, a floating object appears to twist and shift in impossible ways – revealing the hidden mechanisms of perception.
These works combine science and art, inviting a moment of deep, quiet wonder: a realisation that your mind does not merely interpret reality – it constructs it.
And in that moment, something instinctive becomes undeniable. You are not watching a trick. You are catching your perception in act.
"Cornered": A minimalist, mind-bending shape that appears to rotate as you move.
This isn't our first illusion. Our previous one, "Slow Dance" , raised over $550,000 and is now in over 9,000 homes around the world – a simple frame that made real objects move in slow motion.
Now we are bending not only time, but also space.
THE POWER OF THE BRAIN – AND BLIND SPOTS
It often starts with double-checking: Wait... how can this happen?
Then you move, and the illusion is reinforced . The visual signals flowing into your eyes confirm something completely impossible : an object floating in space, shifting with your position and orienting itself according to your gaze.
Even when you understand how this works, the illusion does not disappear — it deepens. The more your mind tries to reconcile it, the more it reveals how powerful and limited perception can be.
"Worldview", a grid bent at an impossible angle – one of three initial design proposals for Impossible Corners.
"Pathless", a 3D maze that folds space inwards and then outwards again.
CHOOSE YOUR PORTAL
We are launching three Impossible Corners models — each with its own interpretation of spatial illusion and perceptual shift.
Where will yours be located?
And who will you blow away first?
CORNERED
"Cornered: A cube mysteriously floats in an altered corner room. 48 cm x 48 cm x 48 cm
PATHLESS
"Pathless": A 3D maze that moves between the known and the unknown. 47 cm x 47 cm x 47 cm
WORLDVIEW
"Worldview": A cubic matrix transports us to another world. 29 inches (left) x 19 inches (right) x 5.5 inches (height)
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The first time someone came into my studio and saw an installation, they gasped and slowly began to move around the room as if circling a magic trick. Then I realised – it doesn't just look strange. It feelsstrange.
The illusion is deceptively simple – and even when you know how it works, it can still feel incredible. Three removable panels (movable, paint-safe) are placed precisely along the walls that meet at the top corner of a room. Each decal is designed with carefully calculated visual cues that reinforce the illusion of an inverted space – making the corner appear to protrude rather than recede, turning your sense of depth and reality upside down.
Close to the walls, it is easier to see the illusion – three vinyl posters are carefully designed and positioned to create a spatial illusion of completely flat elements.
This works thanks to the mathematics of perspective – when the decals generate the same visual impression as if a floating object were present, the brain has no reason to reject that interpretation. Surprisingly, the illusion remains convincing even when you move – which reinforces its legitimacy and causes the brain to lock even more deeply into the perception of a rotating object hanging in the corner.
Thanks to an effect called Gestalt closure, your brain connects visual clues into a single coherent image – even if that image does not exist in reality. With Impossible Corners the brain can either maintain its usual perception of the room or switch to the illusion – but it cannot maintain both at the same time . The stronger the visual signals are embedded in the graphics, the more difficult it becomes not to be drawn into the constructed, false reality.
SEE THE DEPTH
One of the most profound and beautiful aspects of Impossible Corners is how it reveals that perception itself is a construct of the mind. Is it wrong to see the illusion? Is it true to see the room in the "normal" way? From a broader perspective both areequally real – and equally false. Our entire 3D experience of the room is not discovered, but generated.
Impossible corners points to the underlying informational reality under anyone's perception of space and time. We do not live live in reality, we create it. This reflects a central insight in Buddhist thought, where the term emptiness (śūnyatā) refers to the constructed, interdependent nature of all phenomena.
What is real if I can turn my perception upside down at will?
Impossible Corners is a gentle reminder of the power of the mind – the power that gives rise to space, time and everything in between.
HISTORY
Two important artistic influences have shaped Impossible Corners: anamorphosis and impossible objects.
GNISTAN: ANAMORPHOSIS + IMPOSSIBLE OBJECTS
Before Impossible Corners, I created paintings based on a technique called anamorphosis, or forced perspective. With this method, the image is only comprehensible from a specific viewing angle — if you move even slightly, the illusion disappears.
An early anamorphic illustration, painted in my house in 2017. (Thanks, Isaac!) From every other angle, it just looks like a jumble of lines – but if you stand in the right spot, everything falls into place.
One of the most iconic examples of anamorphosis comes from Hans Holbein the Younger's 1533 painting The Ambassadors. At the bottom of the canvas is a grey spot – which at first glance seems meaningless. But from an oblique angle near the edge of the room, that spot becomes a perfect skull. It is a hidden memento mori, a reminder that no matter what power or knowledge the ambassadors may have, everything fades with time. Death is winking at you from the corner. Bam!
That strange stain at the bottom? Seen from the right angle, it's a skull.
What I discovered with Impossible Corners is that by designing directly into the geometry of the corner – where the three walls meet – I could create something new: a shape that appears to rotate as you move, and is no longer tied to a single viewpoint. The illusion spreads throughout the room and your entire 3D perception is turned upside down, no matter where you stand.
_________
You may recognise the image below – a classic impossible object. These shapes, popularised by Oscar Reutersvärd, appear credible at first glance, but upon closer inspection, they violate the rules of 3D space. They exist only in the mind's attempt to solve the impossible.
I consider these to be another precursor to Impossible Corners — flat drawings that trick the brain into creating impossible shapes based on credible clues.
An impossible object.
It takes a lot of paper + glue + scissors to design a work like this!
MATERIAL + DIMENSIONS
The illusion spans three walls – but most vinyl products are far too sticky for indoor use – they can damage the paint or leave residue when removed. We have spent a lot of time finding a high-quality, removable vinyl that is easy to apply and remove without leaving any traces – and can even be reused in another location.
The dimensions of our three models are listed below:
INSTALLATION
Installation is simple: use a ladder to reach the corner and attach the six decals. It takes me about 8 minutes, but if you have high ceilings or limited experience with ladders, it may take longer. I recommend asking someone for help.
No tools are needed except a ladder – but a scraper with soft edges (or even a credit card) can help press the vinyl more firmly against the wall.
A flat print that transforms the space. This is what an entire Impossible Corner looks like before installation.
THE EVENNESS OF YOUR WALL IS IMPORTANT
The structure of the wall plays a major role in the longevity of this work.
Smooth surfaces such as well-painted plaster are ideal. Some light to medium textures (e.g. light plaster) may still hold, but heavily textured surfaces such as popcorn ceilings are not suitable – the vinyl will not adhere reliably.
Check the wall and ceiling surface before purchasing. If you are unsure, please send us a photo – we will be happy to help you confirm whether the product is suitable for your space.
Check the wall structure before installation — the surface finish affects adhesion.
Who is it intended for?
Impossible Corners are designed for a variety of environments – from homes to communal spaces – and thanks to the removable adhesive, they are tenant-friendly too.
Some perfect matches: • Lovers of design, illusions and optical art • People who like to immerse themselves in the nature of reality – and experience it for themselves. • Study room looking for a mind-expanding ornament • Playrooms for children filled with curiosity and imagination • That unusual, wonderful person in your life who seems impossible to buy for
WHAT PEOPLE SAY
"I'm always looking for ways to connect with magic and joy. This feels like one of the easiest and most powerful ways to bring that feeling right into my living room." -MK
"It's such a simple and ingenious way to transform a wall into the focal point of the room. It's the first thing all guests want to know about – and a fantastic conversation starter." – SM
The more I look at them, the more Impossible Corners blows me away. I can't see the "real" corner anymore – even if I try. My brain has been turned completely upside down, or perhaps rather inside out. What I love is that it's not just an entertaining illusion, but a profound pointer to how the brain constructs experiences." – JB
🌟 Final comment
This wall installation is not just decoration – it is an experience that encourages the viewer to question what they see. By reshaping perception rather than the room itself, it creates wonder, curiosity and artistic depth in any space. A bold statement for anyone who loves thought-provoking art. ✨
